What is matched betting? A worked example and its limits

What the calculation does

Matched betting combines a bookmaker promotion with a hedge intended to reduce dependence on the sporting result. It still involves betting, committed cash and execution risk. A mathematical model is not a guarantee that every real-world requirement will be met.

A back bet wins when a selection happens. A lay against the same selection wins when it does not. Laying “Team A to win” includes both a draw and a win for the opponent. Backing Team B alone does not cover a draw.

A complete hypothetical example

Imagine an offer awarding a 30-unit stake-not-returned free bet after a 10-unit cash bet. With back odds 2.50, lay odds 2.60 and 2% exchange commission, the rounded lay stake is 9.69. Liability is about 15.50 and the qualifying result is about −0.50.

For the 30-unit free bet, use hypothetical back odds 5.00, lay odds 5.20 and 2% commission. The rounded lay stake is 23.17, liability about 97.31 and the bonus conversion result about 22.70. After the qualifying loss, that leaves about 22.20 before subscriptions, other costs and taxes. These are examples, not current offers.

The bonus face value is not its cash value. Notice that a 30-unit bonus can need nearly 100 units of real cash to cover.

What must match

• The event, selection, time period and settlement rules.
• Accepted odds and enough liquidity to match the entire hedge.
• Promotion eligibility, opt-in, payment method, minimum odds and deadline.
• The actual commission on your account and enough available balance.
